India focuses on spice traceability

The Indian spice industry is prioritising food safety and supply chain transparency to secure global growth.

India is transforming its approach to spice production by focusing on quality and traceability. Following the recall of branded products in Hong Kong and Singapore, the Spices Board introduced mandatory ethylene oxide testing for consignments sent to those markets in April 2024.

According to heraldglobe.com, the industry is now expanding this focus beyond export compliance. Companies are increasingly taking responsibility for the entire supply chain, from the farm to the consumer, to ensure the safety of spices sold domestically within India.

Despite recent shifts, India remains a global leader in the sector. In FY25, the country produced roughly 11.99 million tonnes of spices, with exports valued at US$4.52 billion. Chilli, cumin, and turmeric continue to be the primary export categories.
